House Tomar

House Tomar

  • March of Tomar
  • Sworn to the Duke of Vass
  • Crest: The Crest of House Tomar is a gray pillar on a black oval over a field of green.
  • Motto of House Mindolin: “Each of us, an Army.”

House Tomar borders the nation of Sask, and has the responsibility of guarding the Kingdom against threats from that quarter.  Their seat of power is in Pillarton, a town which has as its centerpiece a thirty-foot-tall metal pillar, called the Great Pillar of Pillarton.  The pillar predates the arrival of the House to the area, and no one knows where it came from or who built it.  It is covered in engravings of a foreign language no one can read.  House legend says that the pillar was divinely created as a marker showing the immigrant tribes of the land where to settle.  This is disputed by the other Houses of the Kingdom.

The pillar at Pillarton has become so much a part of House mythology that it has been incorporated into their crest, the architecture of their buildings, and even their martial philosophy.

Culture of House Tomar

The culture of House Tomar stresses individual resilience in the face of adversity.  Individualism is a greater part of the House culture than for most Houses, and while one person may help another, there is a certain stigma in asking for help.  The nature of chivalry in Tomar includes the idea of helping someone without making them feel weak.  Sometimes members of the House will make absurd statements to help others, such as, “I enjoy painting houses, would it be all right if I join you?”

Martial Traditions

House Tomar differs in most other Houses in their preference for the Tower Shield, which is inspired by the Great Pillar of Pillarton, and enables each foot-soldier to become  a virtually unassailable opponent.  Knights do learn the use of traditional sword, horse-riding, mounted shield, and lance, but they prefer to fight on foot in formation with their great, tall shields.  They are well trained in formation fighting, as their fighting techniques ironically work best with a man to either side of them, watching their flanks.

Dark Secrets of House Mindolin

House Tomar is in possession of ancient tablets which can help translate the writings on the Great Pillar at Pillarton, but they conceal this because something in those writings would be an embarrassment to the House or possibly to the religion of the Kingdom.
