House Cambrin

House Cambrin

  • County of Cambrin
  • Sworn to the Duke of Arilan
  • Crest: The Crest of House Cambrin was once a blue cow over a green field, but this Crest was officially changed by the House after the Plague of Widowgrass.  Now their crest is the skull of a steer over a green field, with a blue flower sprouting from one of its eye-sockets.
  • Motto of House Cambrin: “We are the Undying Bloom.”
    • Their motto was once ‘The Unbroken Herd’ but was changed after the Plague of Widowgrass.

House Cambrin was once matched with House Safton as premier cattle-producers.  But a sudden proliferation of Widowgrass Fifty years ago shattered the House economy, resulting in mass poverty and famine, and the complete re-engineering of the House economy.  The ‘Plague of Widowgrass’ is still spoken of and lamented in House tales, and some still live who remember that terrible time that ruined an entire generation.

Since then, the House has re-invented itself as crop farmers and gardeners, with the Nobles of the House practicing the art of Floriculture, or the creation of beautiful flowers.  Yearly competitions are held for the best flowers, and the winning nobles are celebrated within the County.  Moreover, some of the most beautiful flowers grown in the County are considered valuable treasures throughout the realm and beyond.  An unknown petty King of the Dune Sea is said to have paid a thousand gold coins for a rare and beautiful rose he could add to his Oasis garden.

The County Capital is at Riverbend, appropriately named as the town occupies a bend in the Queen’s River, which feeds into Queen’s Bay.

Culture of House Cambrin

There is a sense of lament within the House about their lost cattle-raising heritage.  But so, too, is there a pride in their ability to persevere and adapt.  They managed to re-invent themselves and their entire economy in a single generation.  They endured unusual levels of poverty for a noble House.  When they indulge in finery now, it is an act of rebellion against the hands of fate, and a refusal to be broken by cruel circumstance.

Martial Traditions

House Cambrin practice with the traditional Knightly implements of sword and lance, but their troops are unique in their use of the ‘War Scythe,’ a type of polearm based on the farming implement.  This weapon came into use after the Plague of Widowgrass as a way to harness their emerging agricultural skills in the practice of warfare.

Dark Secrets of House Cambrin

House Cambrin’s superior gardening skills conceal a darker trade.  House Cambrin are the premier cultivators of poisonous plants in the realm, and supply the realm’s secret societies and black guilds with a variety of exotic and powerful poisons used in assassinations.
