The King X Arilan is a shrewd man, like many of his line. He prefers deals to violence, and controls his noble subjects by granting them positions they desire so that they have something to lose if he becomes displeased with them. In his youth, as a Prince, it is likely he Captained a ship of the royal fleet, at least for a time. This probably taught him about leadership as well as seamanship and combat techniques. But it is doubtful he's had to engage in any rigorous activity in at least a decade.
The King is married to a Queen Consort from House Madrona. It is likely to be a happy marriage overall, though surely his wife plies her own schemes from time to time.
The King has at least one child, a daughter, who is of marriageable age.
The King has at least one younger brother who acts as Duke of Arilan, and also the Chancellor of the realm, helping to manage administrative affairs while also heading the Council of noble Houses that advise the king.
The King has a secret shrine somewhere in his palace, dedicated to some undersea God that is only half-remembered as being an ancient patron to the House. It is House tradition that this unknown, half-remembered sea God must always be honored lest their fortunes fail. House lore suggests that an ancient man of the line married a sea-maid of some description in a poorly-recorded union meant to secure Arilan's mastery of the sea. Some children of the line are still born with webbed feet or hands, and conceal this with gloves. Whether the King is among those with this trait is up to the player.
